LocationIndian Hills State Golf Course is located in the Town of Erwin just south of the Corning/Riverside/Painted Post area. HistoryThe Indian Hills course was built in 1964 on the flood plain of the Tioga River, which is directly across the road from the clubhouse. The State owns 2,400 ft./731.5 m. of river frontage. Like many courses, Indian Hills was originally a farm.
The only other course in the Corning area is the Corning Country Club, a private club. In 2007 when Indian Hills was having financial difficulties, it was acquired by the State of New York. As the only public course in the Corning area, it can be busy at times. Golfers who prefer less of a crowd and can stand fewer amenities and a more challenging terrain may want to drive a few more miles to Pinnacle State Park in Addison.
The CourseThe wheelchair-accessible clubhouse has a pro shop, locker rooms, a formal restaurant, and a well-appointed lounge/bar. Just outside the clubhouse is an outdoor pavilion with picnic tables, a chipping area, and a practice putting green. Both carts and clubs may be rented. Lessons are available.
The course at Indian Hills has both an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course. The par-72 course is marked for forward, regulation, and championship play. The course is relatively flat with a liberal sprinkling of small sand traps and water hazards. There is only one pond. There are no bushes, and the many trees on the course were placed into the design in a fairly linear fashion. Since 1964 when the course was designed, the trees have grown quite large, and some are fine specimens. This can give one the feeling of playing in an arboretum.
The course is open from April to November. Play begins at 7:00 a.m.
Course design (pdf) Group EventsEvents such as weddings, reunions, and business meetings are handled by the concession company. The restaurant can accommodate 157 seated guests with overflow being seated in the lounge/bar. The outdoor pavilion is available and there is space outdoors for large tents. The facilities are modern, an ideal place for a group events.
