Historic Significance: Association with Dayton S. Morgan (1819-1890). Morgan met William H. Seymour of Brockport and the two started the Globe Iron Works in Brockport in 1844. Shortly thereafter, they were approached by Cyrus H. McCormick who had devised a crude mechanical reaper. After considerable improvement, McCormick and Globe Iron Works entered into an agreement whereby Globe would manufacture, market, and sell 100 reapers for the harvest season of 1846. Globe Iron Works thereby became the first reaper manufacturer in the world. A couple of years later, Morgan and Seymour manufactured a reaper model of their own design called the "New Yorker," which became quite popular. In 1851, the company produced and sold 500 reapers. Morgan then bought out Seymour's interest in the company (eventually renaming the company D.S. Morgan & Company) and his rights to the patents and licensed other companies to manufacture reapers. Patent infringements occurred and the resulting law suits gained wide attention. Morgan engaged in other business ventures which appear to have been successful. His home is now a museum owned by the Western Monroe Historical Society and is open for tours by appointment. See a more detailed description of Morgan's life.

Style: Modern

Period: 1875-1974

Note: Originally known as North Park, this three-mile, 297-acre county park preserves the east side of the Genesee River gorge and the forest in that area. The Olmsted brothers were asked to plan this park and Maplewood Park, which became part of Frederick Law Olmsted's living art. They both fit in well with Olmsted's desire to create sweeping vistas and his use of rocky outcroppings and water features. Considered the father of American landscape architecture, Olmsted is best known for having created Central Park in New York City. Rarely does anyone acknowledge his work in Rochester. Seneca Park is controversial because of its zoo on which one could write volumes. See more information about other activities the park currently offers.
