Historic Significance: Associated with Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899), a successful attorney, abolitionist, and promoter of women's rights. He was considered one of the great orators of his time. He lived only the first few months of his life in this house at which time his family moved out of the area. The house is now a museum of his life owned by the Council for Secular Humanism. Historic Significance: Associated with (Benedict ) Arnold Potter (1761-1810). Originally from Rhode Island, William and Penelope Hazard Potter came to Yates County with their five children, including Arnold, as part of Jemima Wilkinson's Universal Friends Society. Arnold Potter eventually owned most of the land that now comprises the towns of Middlesex and Potter. His mansion is said to have been built in 1806. Historic Significance: Associated with Jemima Wilkinson (1752-1819). A Quaker by birth, Wilkinson was the first American-born woman to start a religion. Called the Society of Universal Friends, it espoused pacifism, abolitionism, and plain dress. In 1790 she brought 260 followers to the area and set up a utopian community. The community dwindled after Wilkinson's death. See a biography of Wilkinson and "The Universal Friend." See a photo of the house. The Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society owns a collection of Wilkinson memorabilia. The house is currently a private residence and not open to the public.
